The Internet is an excellent tool for obtaining and disseminating career information. In today’s global market, an employer can access a resume across the continent in a matter of seconds. There are countless web sites designed to post resumes for job seekers and openings for employers.

It can also be used as a tool for researching occupational data. A great place to start is the Occupational Outlook Handbook produced by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. This web site contains detailed descriptions of over 200 occupations representing over 90% of the American workforce.
This information includes daily tasks of the job, training required, related occupations, projected growth, average salaries and sources for additional information.

Start here with the Occupational Outlook Handbook: www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

The Dictionary of Occupational Titles is now called the O*Net and contains detailed descriptions of jobs. Find it online at: www.onetcenter.org

Try www.salary.com and discover what the average salary is for the position you are seeking, both nationally and locally. This information will give you a distinct edge when negotiating your salary.

Your local Chamber of Commerce provides a wealth of information and connections to local employer’s web sites. In Lexington, it is www.lexchamber.com. Click on the "Business Directory" and all chamber business members are accessible at your fingertips.

As for web sites to assist you in your job search, here is a partial list of sites
that will get your resume in cyber space:
www.careerbuilder.com
www.hotjobs.com
www.jobvillage.com
www.iccweb.com

Resume help on the Internet:
www.professional-resume-writers.com

Here is a list of sites targeting Kentucky employers:
www.nationjob.com/kentucky
www.kentuckyjobstore.com
www.employmentspot.com/state/ky.htm
www.thejobsdirectory.com/ky.htm
www.kentucky.jobopenings.net
www.jobsearch.org/KY

Remember the Internet is only one of many tools you should utilize in your job search. Don’t rely solely on the world wide web to catch your next position.

In recent career surveys, 86% of job seekers secured employment because of their network connections. A network includes friends, family, alumni contacts and business colleagues that open the door for an interview.

The other 14% of survey respondents found employment through the Internet and print media.
Our strong recommendation is that you spend 86% of your job search networking with others and 14% of your time using tools such as the internet and print media.
